What Should Be Released from Your Heart?
Whenever we think of healing, our minds often turn to people who are physically ill. Physical illness is the reason we have hospitals, clinics, and healthcare professionals who care for us when our bodies no longer function as they should. We thank God for the remarkable advances in modern medicine that have made it possible to diagnose, treat, and cure many diseases. Yet Jesus desires something even greater for us. He wants us to be whole, healed not only in body but also in mind, heart, and spirit. Many people appear physically healthy yet carry deep emotional wounds that steal their peace and joy. That is why, in this Sunday’s readings, Jesus draws our attention to destructive emotions such as anger, resentment, unforgiveness, bitterness, and the desire for revenge. These hidden burdens damage our relationship with God, harm our relationships with others, and rob us of inner peace. Jesus’ prescription is simple but challenging: forgive without limits. He asks us to forgive not only for the good of those who have hurt us, but also for our own healing and freedom. When we hold on to resentment, we remain prisoners of past hurts. Bitterness keeps old wounds alive and prevents us from experiencing the peace that God wants to give us. Research has shown that chronic anger and unforgiveness can increase stress, anxiety, and other health problems. More importantly, they burden the soul and prevent us from fully receiving God’s mercy. Forgiveness does not change the past, but it frees us from being controlled by it. Therefore, let us release from our hearts whatever is poisoning our peace. Let go of old grudges. Forgive those who have offended you. Trust God with the hurts you cannot heal on your own. Forgive your past, be grateful for today, and remain hopeful for tomorrow. Then you will discover the peace, freedom, and joy that Christ offers to all who follow Him. Amen
